Introducing VPP App Distribution Without an Apple ID

VPP App Distribution, No Apple ID Required

Starting today, Bushel can be used to deploy Volume Purchase Program (VPP) apps to Apple devices running iOS 9 or OS X 10.11 El Capitan without the need for an Apple ID. That’s right, no Apple ID required!

While countless businesses use Mobile Device Management (MDM) and VPP for app distribution, each individual device has traditionally required an Apple ID. With this Apple ID requirement, organizations had to come up with a strategy to get a unique Apple ID on every device. Some created company-owned Apple IDs and others allowed an employee to use his or her personal Apple ID. In either case, this process presented some challenging logistics.

With Apple’s recent introduction of this new app deployment method alongside the release of iOS 9 and OS X 10.11, VPP apps can now be assigned directly to your organization’s iPads, iPhones and Macs. There is no VPP invitation process and no need for an Apple ID on the devices. This greatly simplifies the critical task of deploying apps to devices.

If it makes sense for your deployment, or if devices are running previous operating systems, the Apple ID assignment method will remain available. This can also be helpful if your employees own multiple devices because one app assignment can be downloaded across an employee’s multiple devices (i.e. iPad and iPhone). If you have shared devices, or if you don’t want to work through the logistics of creating an Apple ID strategy, Bushel can now assign VPP apps directly to each device.

To take advantage of this new app deployment feature with Bushel, be sure to upgrade iPads and iPhones to iOS 9 and Macs to OS X 10.11 El Capitan. If you haven’t already created a free Volume Purchase Program account for your organization, you can get started here:  Volume Purchase Program for Business.

Bushel is Mobile Device Management, simplified for smaller environments and now allows your organization to deploy VPP apps over the air, no Apple ID required. Create your own Bushel account and manage three devices for free, forever. Additional devices are just $2 per device per month. Get started at www.bushel.com.

  • Great post!

My organization uses an odd application that is not available in the iOS App Store. It’s a free application… But, for whatever reason, we have to visit a web URL to download it. Ok, fine… I used configurator to install it to 25 devices. But now the version has expired and I need to re-download it! I guess this is similar to the Android concept of “Side Loading.” Is there a way Bushel can help me get this app updated (i.e. replaced with the newer version)?

Hi Matt, Bushel can’t do this yet, but we’re looking into it, so stay tuned for more features!

Any news on when we might be able to distribute enterprise applications? Thanks.

Hi Ben, we’ve been working on this but don’t have a ship date yet. We’ll definitely post about it when the feature is compete and ships!
